This soothing podcast is one to go with your coffee and croissant à la home office. Today, we add positivity to our morning rhythms and learn to smell the roses! Jennifer McFarland teaches us the power of perspective and invites us on a philosophical exploration of happiness.
We discover how outlook can profoundly affect quality of life. The wrong perspectives can magnetize negativity. Not via the law of attraction, but thanks to neuroscience. We train our brains where to place its attention. Thus Debbie Downer probably spends more time in tragedies than in Commedia dell'artes. Optimistic intentionality can truly shift your life. Keep things in perspective - but with the joy of soft focus!
Here are 3 ways to start:
1.Happiness is a choice
If you want to lead a different life, make different choices! Situationally we always have a choice. Choose to be positive. Choose to take action. Choose to listen to your soul. Do things that bring you joy and are in alignment with your desires. Start by practicing awareness and exploring your relationships to your thoughts. Take control of how you think about situations and yourself. Remember, to let go of anger, rumination, and emotions that no longer serve you. Take note of any cognitive thinking distortions and vote for healthier options. Negative thoughts can make us both physically and emotionally sick, so make kind choices. Even if you feel 1% better per day, baby steps lead to big results.
2.The “One Good Thing” exercise Find one good thing about the worst day of your life. This is an exercise that has the power to pivot your entire life. It teaches us that there is something good in everything. There are more possibilities than the set of conditions you have given yourself. What happens to us aren’t the events that transpire, but the story we tell ourselves. If we see what’s suggested to us in positive psychology and our negativity biases, then it’s vital that we look for the good. When the chips are down, look for the positive and you will get more of it. You’ll notice more of what was there all along.
3.Ask the right questions
Practice the little exercise of asking yourself what makes you happy? Is this situation making you happier? How much joy are you filtering out of this experience? If you are not getting enough blue skies out of an experience, it might be time to make a change.
Even In the enclosing of quarantine, look for today’s glimmering silver lining!
